A Little history and some interesting facts;
The USS North Carolina is 729 feet -- that's the size of 2 1/2 football fields. It typically had a crew of about 2,300.
It made its own electrical power, producing 8.4 megawatts of electricity -- enough to power a small town of 6500 people.
She steamed over 300,000 miles during wartime.
When the keel of NORTH CAROLINA was laid in October of 1937, she was the first battleship to be constructed in sixteen years
The ship could carry 120 days of food supplies, including: 7800 eggs, 16,800 lbs of butter, 94,200 lbs of sugar, 214,000 lbs of fresh meat, 466,000 lbs of fresh vegetables and 135,000 lbs of fresh fruit.
The battleship has about 15,000 tons of steel armor plate, which is about 42% of her weight.
She sustained a hit when a Japanese torpedo slammed into the battleship's hull, creating an 18x32 foot hole.
The North Carolina carried out nine shore bombardments, sank an enemy troopship, destroyed at least 24 enemy aircraft and assisted in shooting down many more. Her anti-aircraft guns helped halt scores of attacks on aircraft carriers.
At war's end, she had lost only 10 men in action and had 67 wounded.
In 1960 when the US Navy reported the battleship would be scrapped, the State's citizens mounted a campaign to bring it to North Carolina to preserve her as the State's war memorial to the 10,000 North Carolinian's who lost their lives during World War II.
THE TV SHOWS
As with any historic site, various ghost stories and sightings have been reported through the years.
Various TV shows have filmed here including TAPS GHosthunters, SyFYs Fact or Faked Paranormal Files, One Tree Hill, Discovery Channel and these shows, to name just a few;
SciFi Channels Ghost Hunters crew on board the Battleship North Carolina. During the course of filming, an EVP was captured in the area of the brig. Also loud banging, footsteps, hatchways opening and closing and other anomalous noises were experienced in various parts of the ship and could not be attributed to any person in the area.Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of TAPS saw a moving shadow. As they followed the shadow, they noticed a bracket which was hanging loose from the bulkhead was moving as if someone had bumped into it. They followed the shadow into a room which had only one entrance/exit and no possible hiding place. SciFi Channel website: http://www.scifi.com/ghosthunters/episodes/season2/205/
