Schoenbrunn Village, Ohio (Near New Philladelphia OH)
Enter back into the past as you venture thru the woods and into Schoenbrunn village. Journey back more than 2 centuries ago to a time when men, women and children struggled to survive another day on the frontier. Imagine the Revolutionary War era in Ohio when Native Americans, the Moravian Missionaries, the British, and the settlers were not-so-willing neighbors.
The History:
Schoenbrunn Village (meaning Beautiful Spring) was founded in 1772 as a Moravian Mission among the Delaware Indians and was the first Christian settlement in Ohio. The village contained around 300 inhabitants, 60 homes, a cemetery, a church meeting house and a schoolhouse. The Delaware Indians converted to Christianity with the help of Rev. David Zeisberger and his brethren of missionaries. The village flourished for several years and was abandoned in 1777 due to hostilities that had developed. Only the 44 left buried in God's Acre remain in this quaint village area. Graves date back to 1772 and include many children struck down by disease.
Today there are 17 log buildings including a church house and a school house. These were constructed according to drawings and maps found of the orginal settlement. These bulidings will be open for you to explore and several will have historical re- enactors "living" on site.

The Hauntings
It would make sense that spirits or as the Delaware called them "Tschichtschank" would be present. The Native Americans were very spiritual people and considered all living things to be sacred. We have had some odd things happen while at Schoenbrunn at night. Be sure to bring cameras and tape recorders. (to record EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena)
God's Acre is what the settlers of Schoenbrunn Village named their cemetery and it is truly a quiet and sacred spot of land. All of the markers are 1772-1777 era and are field stones which were carved by hand. Explore the small cemetery by lantern light, explore the buildings, enjoy the peaceful solitude of the woods and venture into the past with us!
